José Iraola

José Iraola (Camagüey, 1961) is a Cuban painter who lives and works in Miami.

At the age of 26 he left his homeland and went to live in Madrid, Spain until 1989 when he finally moved to Miami, United States. His artistic work is mainly based on painting and although he began studying at the San Alejandro National School of Fine Arts, Havana, in 1986, he did not finish his academic studies at that institution.

In January 1987 he exhibits a personal exhibition called Jugamos con los dioses (We play with the gods) at the Domingo Ravenet art gallery in Havana. Three years later, in Madrid, he presented another exhibition called Caja Postal. From 1993 onwards he usually works with Luis Marín and they exhibit together that year in Ecuador at the Contemporary Art Hall of the Municipal Museum of Guayaquil and at the Municipal Museum of Modern Art in Cuenca. In 1995, the artists propose the work Posibles Orígenes y Mitos at La Galeria in Quito, Ecuador and in 1997 they show Presencia Cubana en Los Angeles at Antioch University in Los Angeles, United States.

The artist was invited to the Salon Playa’85 held at the Servando Cabrera Moreno Gallery in Havana, Cuba, in December 1985. In September 1991 he presents some of his works in Abstractions at the Inter American Gallery, at the Wolfson Campus of Miami Dade Community College, Miami, USA. In March 1994 he participated in the Afro Cuban Myth at the Barbara Greene Gallery in Miami, USA and was also a member of the 9 Cuban American Artists exhibited in 1996 at the Kingsborough Community College Art Gallery in New York, USA.

Some of his works are in the collections of Antioch University in Los Angeles, United States; the Diners Club in Quito, Ecuador; the Housatonic Museum of Art, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, United States and the Peruvian-North American Cultural Institute, in the capital of that Andean country. The Museum of Modern Art in Cuenca, Ecuador also acquired some of his canvases, as did the Museum of Art of Fort Lauderdale in the United States.
